2024-06-15 Ed Rae Memorial Fun Fly

It was an unseasonably cool and blustery morning, although a much better upgrade from the weather a week before. As I arrived at the field with my cup of Timmie’s in hand, I saw our stalwart, ever-present president already at our field and getting things set up.

As we discussed the sub-optimal weather conditions, the wind was blowing steadily from the north, the sky was a solid grey, and the  temperature was around the 13° mark (REALLY glad I brought my Kenora dinner jacket and a windbreaker) and we were wondering what the attendance was going to be like.

As the morning progressed, the parking lot quickly filled up and at 9:00, Pierre led the pilot’s meeting, the usual rules as per MAAC and such. After that we held a brief memorial ceremony for our friends no longer with us, Sue MacDonald, Jim Denyer and Jason Hlaing. A quick word from Mike Lalonde about the spot landing contest and from yours truly and we were on our way.

We had 32 registered pilots! Very brave intrepid fliers! Thankfully, the clouds started to break up, the temperature steadily rose, and the wind died down somewhat, although it remained gusty. At 11:00 we had the spot landing competition, initially starting out with three competitors but four more joined and decided to take a swing at it. After all seveen had flown we actually had a tie!! A fly off was held between Mark Winstanley and Andy Smith with Andy taking the prize.

Flying was resumed while some took part in the burgers and hotdogs provided by the volunteers of the canteen as arranged by Robert St Germain.

At 1:00 there was a control line demo put on by Richard Gareau, who did many amazing aerobatic maneuvers but thankfully not the infamous figure 9. We had a very strong showing of control line folks, as well as some larger scale, fun flyer and even some EDFs flying in (at times challenging) crosswinds with only one major mishap but we won’t talk about that.

All in all, this year’s Ed Rae started out looking a bit questionable due to weather but ended up being a pretty good day (the sun burn on my face as evidence to that!) .

I would like to personally thank all the volunteers who stepped up to help and make the Ed Rae Memorial Fun Fly a great day at the field:

2024-08-24 Giant All Scale Fun Fly

2024-08-24 Giant All Scale Fun Fly

On Saturday August 24th, Stetson RC Flyers held our Scale event. Traditionally, this event was strictly for giant scale aircraft but this year we opened it up to scale aircraft any size. It had a bit of a confusing name but it seems to have worked, this year. We really couldn’t have asked for a better day weatherwise. Winds were light, the sky was mostly clear and it wasn’t too hot. As CD of the event, I had all my volunteers lined up, On flight line we had Kevin, Greg, Tony, Charlie, Mark and Alain. Hal did an amazing job as usual of photos and this year we had a little something special. All cooked up in my devious little mind. The club had a very nice Top Flite Cessna 182 donated to it. This plane was completely built, with LED lights, fibreglass cowl, an Evolution 15 gas engine and all the scale bits and bobs to make this plane a real looker. My idea was, that for every full flight put in, the pilot would get a raffle ticket for said airplane. Therefore, the more flights the pilot flew, the more chances they had to win the 182. Thanks to Robert for taking the task of ticket dispenser. Food was provided by Robert St Germain’s crew and I even got to take a bit of a break and enjoy a tasty burger! At 1:00 raffle prizes were drawn, we had gift certificates from Great Hobbies (1) and Hobby Hideaway (5). Please make sure you pop into these two hobby shops and support them as they repeatedly are very generous to our club and provide us with raffle prizes. Flying continued for another hour and half and then we had the draw for the 182, which was won by Michel Boulerice. Lucky guy! I’d like to thank all our volunteers and Pierre Coulombe for his guidance. I intend to CD next years Scale event and I would like to do the same flight raffle, so I am looking for a donated kit (which I can build) or a completed airplane. Thanks to all those that came out, had some fun and some laughs. In all, there were 65 flights throughout the day, special mention to Brian Perkins from Kingston who flew his crazy looking 1924 Dormoy Bath Tub and his RC bald eagle! Also, though he didn’t fly, my good friend, also from the Kingston club, John Staudt, drove up to visit and check out our event. Hoping we will see more flyers from ours and other Ottawa Valley clubs and beyond next year!

2024-10-07 Fall Field Cleanup

Stetson Flyers Fall Cleanup

Its hard to believe that we are approaching the end of another summer of fabulous flying.  The Fall clean up signals the change in weather and on Monday October 7, a small but mighty crew came to help. The objective was to clean up after the summer, prepare the facility for the winter and to support the (brave) winter flyers!

This is the work that was accomplished:

Secured the anchors of the large shelter.  Removed the T post (tripping hazard) close to the 1st flight bench on east side. Cleaned both BBQ’s. Removed summer shelter and installed winter shelter. Removed over hanging tree along laneway close to the monument. Leveled the most westerly flight table. Added gravel to low spots along the laneway and parking lot. Cut and removed the overgrowth at the west end of the parking area and along the laneway.  Stacked picnic tables under the larger shelter.

Thank you to the following members who freely gave of their time to make this work happen.  This is the reason why we have such a nice facility.

Pat Hennessy
Greg Oliver
Fred Lottes
Lawrence Edmunds
Pierre Coulombe
Gary Robertson
Branko Djuric
Francis Trepanier
Michel Raymond

A big shout out to Gary who persevered cleaning the greasy BBQ’s. This was by far the dirtiest job!  And to Greg who cleared the overgrowth with a nasty-looking whipper snipper rotary blade! We also have some members who consistently attend the site clean-ups: Pierre, Fred and Daniel.  Thanks, guys, for your dedication!
Lastly, we hope that you consider doing some winter flying.  Nigel’s Tips and Tricks on successful winter flying will be coming soon. For new members who may not realize, we also have the January 1st flight and the March Fun Fly to look forward to, so outfit your planes with skis.
Happy flying!
